Two resources to support pre-service and just graduated education students

Posted by Leonie McIlvenny on September 14, 2012 at 11:30 1 Comment

The following two resources have been developed to support pre-service teachers to create a dynamic eportfolio which not only documents their journey as an undergraduate student but also showcases their abilities as they relate to the National Professional Standards for Teachers. The second resource supports students in addressing the Graduate Standards from the National Professional Standards for Teachers.…

Introducing The TILE Approach

Are you interested in engaging and motivating students? Do you teach units that students perceive as peripheral or, even worse, irrelevant? Are you helping academics to address work and career? Are students (and faculty) exhausted and in need of inspiration? Welcome to the TILE network! More information

Join the network to find out more. We send out very few emails and the tools are free and adaptable. You can access a sample tool here

If you are looking for the information and consent form, you can find it here.

NEWS AND VIEWS

OCTOBER

This month we welcome members from the Australian Collaborative Education Network (ACEN). A three-hour workshop revealed a range of challenges and opportunities for employability development. Challenges included how to negotiate the Fair Work Act in Australia, particularly in relation to volunteerism. If you can help, please let us know!

AUGUST

This month we welcomed NAGCAS institutional representatives and emerging leaders to Curtin, to talk about career development learning and employability development. There is a fantastic appetite for collaborative research, resources and thinking. You can find more information about NAGCAS here.

Also this month, we launched our Curtin employability portal and we are trying to 'tie together' everything from volunteering initiatives through to creativity workshops. Does anyone else have examples of careers, employability and graduate initiatives all put into a single 'home?'

JUNE

More on the hero's journey this month. Olivia has been using diaries to capture student and practitioner career struggles and experiences as they navigate their way through their studies and job market. Her current work, on gaming, is here: https://gamesofbeingmobile.com/

Also this month, do you have any video or text profiles of graduates that we might share with uni students? What does it look like to be a ... (geologist, artist, town planner and so on). Please email me if you can help!

MAY

Welcome to our 5 new members! Our US music colleagues have just finished their annual meeting, where they addressed "emerging archetypes"! It was interesting to see the superhero angle - member Olivia Efthimiou has been helping me to look at career journeys through the lens of heroism and there are some very exciting findings here. In 2017 I'm told the NETMCDO group will meet at the Colburn School in LA, on May 23-24.

APRIL

This month we welcome university instrumental and vocal music teachers in Sydney, who have been sharing their expertise as industry experts in higher education. We hope to share with the community some of their ideas later this month.

Thanks also to member Shelley Kinash, who sent through the details for two associated conferences in Australia:

National OLT Conference – Learning and Teaching 2030
 Melbourne 28-29 April 2016

Aventedge – Graduate employability and industry partnerships forum
Sydney, 1-2 August 2016

MARCH

March saw the publication of a new paper by TILE members Dawn Bennett, Lynne Roberts and Chris Creagh. The paper utilised TILE tools with 1st year physics students. The Physical Review journal is open access, so you can download the paper here. Let us know if you have papers drawn from the TILE tools!

JANUARY

In January we welcomed new members from Australian universities where academics have been trialling TILE tools with their staff and students. The next set of tools will focus on engaging academics who are new to this space. If you have any tools and resources relating to this, please let me know!

NOVEMBER

This month we welcome colleagues from ISSOTL and we also share a sneak preview of the new website. Please check it out and let me know what you think! This is phase one. In the next phase we will be looking to share resources from multiple sources and would welcome your ideas.

SEPTEMBER

This month we welcome colleagues in Japan, who discussed performance science in its many guises during the ISPS conference in Kyoto.

Having written up a couple of the engineering studies, Sally Male and I have updated the "Imagining the future" TILE tool. This in one of our most popular and has now been modified for numerous settings. You can see the new tool here: Tile%20Tool%2016%20Looking%20back%20on%20a%20future%20career.pdf

AUGUST

This month we welcome many colleagues in Brazil who are in Vittorio for the ANPOMM conference. Thank you for making me so welcome! We hope that there will be some Portuguese translations of the TILE tools as a result of the conference.

MARCH

This month we welcome colleagues from the Reflective Conservatoire conference in London, many of whom have expressed interest in a new initiative to bring together innovative practice and resources that enhance students' abilities to become work ready graduates. You can read more here: Innovative practice

AUGUST

This month we continued the focus on how to create work-ready / employable graduates. Are you working in this area - do you have any stories or examples to share, good and bad? Member Angela Beeching has shared some resources related to entrepreneurship. An entrepreneurial mindset is a sought-after attribute, so take a look!

APRIL

This month we welcome colleagues undertaking OLT Commissioned Projects into employability. There are three employability projects, and you can see ours here. We are looking for examples of best practice and would love to hear from you.

MARCH

In March we welcomed students and staff at Murdoch University in Perth. We also gave a TILE workshop to ~75 1st year students in a physics class, working with Australian Learning and Teaching Fellow Chris Creagh.

In February we welcomed colleagues at the National Institute of Education in Singapore. We launched new identity research with pre-service music teachers, and we were thrilled to welcome students and staff to a TILE lecture . The lecture was hosted by UNESCO-NIE CARE. You can find out more about their work here and watch the lecture here.

All 35 of the tools featured in our new book are now available on the book's webpage. The new book illustrates the TILE tools in action! Check out the new page
